'Avatar' to Spawn Three Sequels Instead of Two, Release Dates Revealed

The "Avatar" franchise just got even more epic.

James Cameron and 20th Century Fox revealed today that they will be producing three sequels to the visually stunning 2009 movie, which is not surprising considering it won three Oscars and continues to command the number-one spot on the list of the highest grossing films of all time.

Screenwriters Josh Friedman ("War of the Worlds"), Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver ("Rise of the Planets of the Apes"), and Shane Salerno ("Savages," "Salinger") have signed on to work on the scripts for the upcoming follow-ups, with December 2016 given as the target release date for "Avatar 2."

"Building upon the world we created with 'Avatar' has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience," Cameron said in a statement. "In writing the new films, I've come to realize that 'Avatar''s world, story, and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen."

"Avatar 3" will hit theaters in December 2017, with the fourth installment opening one year after that.
