We Kidnapped Our Chinese Boss for Unlawful Dismissal, Says Suspects

It was a typical insider job as valid and classified information was divulged to facilitate the kidnap of a Chinese businessman and another man whose friend plotted his kidnap in Lagos.

Two different parties who were close to their victims arranged their abduction and collected huge sums of money as ransom running into millions of naira.

While two of the suspects identified as Aduloju Taiwo, 32, and Ufot Akayiene had arranged and executed the kidnap of their boss, a Chinese staff of ZTE Nigeria Limited, Kuang Vingjun, another member of the gang, Jimoh Olalere, arranged the kidnap of his (Vingjun’s) friend, Ifeanyi Kingsley.

The other suspects who were identified as Rotimi Shegelu, Michael Sunday, Chigozie Ideh, Adeyinka Jagbojagbo, Kabiru Jagbojagbo, Adeshina Mutiu and Ope Dada had received the sum of N8.5 million and N1 million from Vingjun and Ifeanyi respectively as ransom before they were released.

The mastermind, Taiwo, who also works as a driver for the company regaled the investigators on how they planned and executed the kidnap of the Chinese man, adding that their act was done in vengeance for the way one of their colleagues was unlawfully dismissed without pay.

He said: “The elderly man was sacked without any benefit, after putting in so many years. Shortly before he was sacked, I resigned because they were not treating us well. When I heard that Baba was sacked without any benefit, I arranged for the kidnap of my former boss because he was only given the sum of N15,000 after he was relieved of his duty.
“Because I was no longer working for the company, I decided to contact Ufot Akaniyene, his driver who resides in the same building with him to give us information on his movements.

“On the day he was returning from work, Ufot called to inform us and we laid ambush and abducted him. We bundled him into our vehicle and drove off. We kept him in our hideout for three days before the company brought the sum of N8.5 million.”

He said they had initially demanded the sum of N35 million from the management of the company but they refused to pay a dime on the grounds that the victim was not kidnapped inside the company's premises, coupled with the fact that it was not also a work day.

He added that it was the victim’s friends that rallied round and put together the sum of N8.5 million that was finally paid as ransom.
